Breast Cancer Awareness
September and October were busy months, in part because of our participation
with the first community-wide Breast Cancer Awareness Brunch at Faith as well as
our first Race for the Cure race team. These were both extraordinary events.
On September 25th, at the Breast Cancer Awareness Brunch the color was pink and food abundant. Sandy Bennett, BSN, RN, made an outstanding educational presentation and survivors enjoyed a good time of celebration. Thirty-two breast cancer survivors from the community were surveyed and provided the following statistical information:
Age Range at time of diagnosis: 34 -74
5 Survivors diagnosed in their 30's
7 Survivors diagnosed in their 40's
10 Survivors diagnosed in their 50's
6 Survivors diagnosed in their 60's
4 Survivors diagnosed in their 70's
24 Survivors were diagnosed through mammography.
8 Survivors found their own cancers with a self-breast exam.
As can be clearly seen by this small group survey, breast cancer knows no boundaries. Through the educational program as well as survivor information, it is our hope we reached the women attending with a powerful message.
We were pleased to provide mammography screenings to two women who had never had one. We also honored the longest surviving members of the community, Sarah Park, since 1982; Norma Long and Sharen Miller, since 1987. What hope they gave to many who had recently been diagnosed. Four in 2004 included Lillian Brashears, Kelly Stanley, Diana Babb and Joyce Babb. Kelly Stanley was also the youngest at diagnosis (34) and there were four women present who were diagnosed after reaching age 70.
It was a sweet time and the spirit of the Lord was certainly present.
